Jeremy Brett starred as Sherlock Holmes in the Granada Television series based on the famous stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Brett's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is the finest interpretation by any actor of this complex and intriguing character.

Having read and re-read the Sherlock Holmes stories many times I am repeatedly astounded at how well Jeremy portrays him. To my mind he captures precisely the essence of Holmes; his moody outbursts, his cocaine addiction, his nervous and high strung disposition, his contempt for women, in fact all of Holmes' eccentricities are portrayed supremely by Jeremy Brett. Whenever I read a Holmes story I see Jeremy playing the part.

Combined with Granada's superb set decoration, period costumes and excellent supporting cast make this a must-watch series for any Sherlockian.

Other cast members of particular mention:-

David Burke - Dr Watson
(1984-1985)
Davids Dr Watson was too much of the fool for my liking. His interpretation played Watson as a bumbling fan boy of Holmes. More underfoot than useful.
David Burke - Dr Watson
Edward Hardwicke - Dr Watson
(1986-1994)
Edward played Watson almost exactly as I had imagined him to be. A valuable assistant rather than the fawning sidekick.
Edward Hardwicke - Dr Watson
Rosalie Williams - Mrs Hudson
Rosalie was a perfect Mrs Hudson. She played the mothering figure supremely and could give Holmes such a look when he was being difficult.
Rosalie Williams - Mrs Hudson
Colin Jeavons - Inspector Lestrade
I hadn't a solid image in my mind for Lestrade but I did consider him more competent than some chatracterisations. Colin played him perfectly.
Colin Jeavons - Inspector Lestrade
Eric Porter - Professor Moriarty
Oh that scowl he could pull. What a wonderful character to play. Eric Looks like a vilian and plays the inteligent professor as well as Jeremy played Holmes.
Eric Porter - Professor Moriarty
Charles Grey - Mycroft Holmes
Holmes' recalcitrant brother was supposed to be smarter than Holmes, so an actor was required who could act inteligent but lazy. Charles not only looked the part he also played it well.
